New Victim Of Living Goddess System : Matina Shakya

“ Every child has right to live in this world.”

Now Matina Shakya three year old daughter of Pratap Man Shakya is the new victim of Nepal’s religious social evil- ‘Living Goddess’.

On the eve of Mahastmi Puja Manita has been appointed as a Living Goddess of Nepal. This social evil is now legal in Nepal. On this occasion more than one dozen Hindu and Buddhist priests chanted sacred hymns and cascaded flowers and grains of rice over her as a blessing.

She was wearing a red silk dress and adorned with red beautiful flowers in her hair. She received approval from the priests and President Ram Baran Yadav.

She will live in an ancient temple at Kathmandu in Nepal until she reaches puberty and loses her divine status. She will be worshiped by Hindus and Buddhists as an incarnation of the powerful Hindu deity Taleju.

This social evil has crushed her Childhood and Future Dreams of happy Married Life. This tradition violates International Child Rights. UNICEF Nepal and CEDPA Washington should interfere into this matter.

Such types of tradition is one of the greatest hurdle for the Protection of the Girls’ Rights. It must be banned for the Protection of the Girls’ Rights in Nepal.

This is an inhumane and barbaric practice that was patronized by the royal family of Nepal. Now that we have kicked the royal family out, this practice must be stopped at any cost. It must be made a criminal offence.

You are absolutely right Ms Charu.

It’s an inhumane and barbaric 500 year
old royal evil which crushes the budding
flowers of Nepal in the name of Goddess
worship.

You are absolutely Right Mr Oscar.

This royal evil is completely a brutal
crime against the innocent Nepali Girls.

It demands local and International
protest for the eradication of evils like
’Living Goddess System’.

I totally disagree with the auther and the topic which was choosen is also really unprofessional and undiplomatic. The tradations and culture have a very big meaning in our country specially among Newars. There is a very good reason for having kumari and by the way Miss. Charu; Rolay family has nothing to do with appointing kumari. I don’t even know why is she named as Royal Kumari. And as far as I know she is not worshipped by Hindus, she is worshipped my newars vajarayana followers. At least you should have done some research before criticizing and bashing it. Anyways I would suggest every one to first know about it in detail before criticizing it. For us kumari is the actual Ruler of Nepal well Kathmandu atleast. We believe king is just one messenger nothing else no Narayan or any of that bullshit.

I do agree that it affects the living condition of a child, and there are numerous ways of solving it. We can make the rule of changing Kumari in every two years or even lesser so that it wont effect the child’s childhood that much. this is just one solution which i thought in 10 seconds there are numerous other ways.

Stop a*s*s kissing UNICEF, CEDPA and all the other INGOS who try and fix us. We Nepalese people have certain cultures and traditions that foreigners might not understand. It is the same case as my nanima not understanding the multiple sex partners and fourth or fifth marriages practiced in the west. But we don’t ever question them!
No man made organization can tell us what to believe and how to practice our own religion. Kumari- is a living goddess. In her short period as a goddess she receives the respect and devotion that not even the whole populations of western females get in their lifetime.
Helping a poor country doesn’t give anyone the right to criticize its people’s faith. I am stunned at how easily 500 years of faith has been washed away by dollars.

Totally agreed. I am really glad that there are still few people in Nepal who still are not the parrots that only speak the language of west....

roopraj ji...i really liked your idea of changing the kumari regularly, or we could suggest that the donations that the kumaris recieve will be put into a trust for them, which can later be used for higher education or what ever they need... Im sure the idea of home schooling isn’t new to us. the newari vajrayana community should get the child a good home tutor who can put her into the same level of education as the rest of the student population of Nepal.
